“In Black Water, a Grey Sky” is the title of an exhibition featuring a series of oil paintings by artist Laura Zvěřina. At first glance, one might notice the seeming simplicity of the works, the childlike playfulness of the figures, and the expressive color palettes.

But what lies beneath the surface? Perhaps things are not as they seem. Perhaps they are not so simple.

Through her paintings, Laura asks what it means to be an artist in today’s world. Her work focuses on lost, solitary heroes trying to find meaning in the chaos of reality through humor, fantasy, and dreams. The striking costumes worn by the figures in the paintings serve as shields against the outside world (and perhaps even against you?) and as tools for searching for their true selves. But the more they search, the more they lose themselves in what they expect from themselves and what the world expects of them.
