The talk will discuss how various Dada and Constructivist artists (Kurt Schwitters, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Laszlo Moholy Nagy, etc.) turned to graphic design as a medium for disseminating their ideas, and how this was taken up by a new generation of artist designers in Central Europe in the 1920’s and 30’s. Jan Tschichold was a young typographer when he first encountered the theories of “typophoto” and the New Photography, but he helped to shape and publicise the movement through his landmark publications: Elementare Typographie (1925) and Die neue Typographie (1928). The talk will also touch on Tschichold’s connections with Czech designers and artists, especially Ladislav Sutnar and Karel Teige, who participated in exhibitions of The Ring that Tschichold helped organise

Přednáška se zaměří na umělce dada a konstruktivismu jako Kurt Schwitters, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg a Laszlo Moholy Nagy, kteří začali používat grafický design jako prostředek k šíření svých uměleckých myšlenek. Tuto metodu od nich brzy přebrali umělci a designéři nové generace ve střední Evropě dvacátých a třicátých let. Jedním z hlavních představitelů byl Jan Tschichold, který se poprvé setkal s teoriemi “typofoto” a nové fotografie jako mladý typograf. Svými klíčovými publikacemi Elementare Typographie (1925) a Die neue Typographie (1928) přispěl k formování a propagaci těchto teorií. Přednáška se také dotkne vztahu mezi Tschicholdem a českými umělci – designéry, zvláště Ladislavem Sutnarem a Karlem Teigem, kteří se podíleli na výstavě skupiny Ring neue Werbegestalter, na které se Tschichold podílel.
